The Transformation of the Academic Profession in Malaysia: Trends and Issues on Institutional Governance and Management
Recent transformations in the national higher education policy and systems as well as working conditions have affected the academic profession in Malaysia. As Malaysian higher education expanded and diversified to meet the demands of contemporary environments, boundaries are being breached between academic activities, professional roles and functions, and governance and management structures. This paper analyses some findings and implications of the governance and management issues derived from the study on The Changing Boundaries of the Academic Profession in Malaysia. The analysis focuses on descriptive data on the location of decision making power, evaluation authority of academic activities as well as on management styles and practices. The trends and issues on institutional governance and management form the background for discussing academic autonomy and the Malaysian academic profession.

She is currently an Associate Research Fellow at the National Higher Education Research Institute (IPPTN), USM and at the Institute for Sustainability and Development (LESTARI), UKM. She is an active researcher, having co authored numerous academic papers for books, journals and conference proceedings. Her Research Interests include internationalisation, policy and management, and sustainability in higher education.

Muhammad Jantan (Dr.) is a Professor in operations research and is currently the Research Dean for the Social Transformation Platform at the University Sains Malaysia. Morshidi Sirat (Dr.) is a Professor of Geography at the School of Humanities, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang and the Director of the IPPTN (National Higher Education Research Institute) since 2002. IPPTN undertakes research related to higher education policies and issues in Malaysia. Morshidi is active in consultancy and contract research work for the World Bank, UNESCO-Bangkok and ASEAN University Network. Morshidi sits in many working committees at the federal ministerial level, formulating and evaluating higher education policies, reviewing university governance structure, formulating action plan to deal with graduate unemployment problems, and constructing models for universities in Malaysia.
