Online learning has experienced exponential growth internationally and is the fastest growing market segment of adult education. The growth of online education is a result of the combined factors of increased student demand for higher education, the reduction of geographic barriers, an increase in the number of Internet users, and institutional drive for profit. This paper will examine the opportunities, benefits, and challenges created by online learning.

Dr. Rebecca Clothey is the Director of the Master’s degree in Higher Education program, a fully online degree program offered at Drexel University, School of Education, in Philadelphia, USA. She is an international educator who has lived and worked on three different continents. She currently teaches online and occasionally telecommunicates from across an ocean. Dr. Clothey speaks frequently at international conferences on the topic of distance education. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh.
