Arguing that three interwoven factors, including globalization, the advancement of technologies, and the theme of sustainable development, have been shaping the new world development, this paper explains the opportunities and challenges that modern universities are facing. While describing how universities’ roles and functions are extended and expanded in the context of globalization and new communication technologies, this paper also points out the requirement that the theme of sustainable development has posed on universities. Considering economic entrepreneurship in modern universities is necessary in exploring their potential in knowledge-based economic production, this paper argues that universities have great responsibility in promoting the next generation of entrepreneurship by which economic activities should be combined with strong social and moral values. Implications for both university initiatives and government policy towards universities are discussed.
